Sue Brooks had receipts for members who have paid their 2008 dues.

Jack Rudolf is looking for speakers at our May and June meetings. Please volunteer.

Speaker | John Thompson and Joan Tilk | Leadership Saskatoon
Leadership Saskatoon is a non-profit organization helping to develop community leaders. Joan is a graduate of the program from 2002. She spoke about her experience and how it inspired her to stay on with the organization as a volunteer mentor. John Thompson is the board chair. Together they explained how the program works and its benefits. Volunteers act as mentors and several day long workshops are run with program participants to help them achieve their full potential. We have been conditioned to think more about infrastructure such as roads and facilities when we think about the development and future of our communities. In actuality, strong leadership is the key to a community's healthy and prosperous future.

John and Joan both emphasized that leaders don't have to be bold and assertive. Leaders are usually enthusiastic participants and modest about their contributions. They also acknowledge and learn from their failures.

Speaker | Mike Jenkins | Candle Lake Resort
Mike was previously with the 722 Club as a representative of the Saskatoon Blades. He left in 2006 and began working with Candle Lake Resort. He returned through the resort in 2007. When the present owners of the resort purchased it in 2003, it was a 9 hole course. Since then they have added another 9 holes, a new convention centre, clubhouse and restaurant. They have added 12 rental cabins and are now adding more than 100 condominiums around the course. Phase I is presently underway. 20 of the new condos to be owned by private individuals can agree with the resort to rent the units out on a daily basis. The owner keeps 70% of the revenue and the resort receives 30% in exchange for doing all the work including booking and cleaning. The units in Phase II and III will not be eligible. 13 units in Phase I are still available.

The owners of the resort also have a construction company in Saskatoon, developing commercial space. They have done a few jobs already and are interested in receiving new work.

Mike had draws for 2 prizes. Keith and Sharon were the winners.

Speaker | Cheryl Tuck-Tallon | T2 Solutions Inc.
Cheryl has been in the breakfast club for approximately 10 years. She has also been married to her husband, Keith, for 10 years. She has her HR Designation out of the University of Dalhousie. She worked as an advisor for insurance companies for several years and then decided to do the same thing for herself. Thus the birth of T2 Solutions Inc. Cheryl said thank you to several people who have encouraged and helped her along the way.

Employees have changed a lot over the recent years. A benefit plan is now an essential for any employer in order to attract and retain employees. Some employers even advertise it. Over the last few years, the employee contribution to the plan has gone down and the employer portion has gone up. 3-5% of an employee's income is a typical amount for the employer to pay. It will be more if there is a pension plan.

Employers don't know how to select an insurance benefits package, set it up or manage it. They also don't have the time and doing it themselves is not cost effective. That's where Cheryl comes in. She can also set up a plan where the employee has a discretionary amount that they can use towards a particular type of coverage that they want. The discretionary amount may increase for each completed year of service with the employer. She calls it a 123 Flex Plan. She can set up a plan for a business of 1 or many.

Cheryl also paints and has donated many paintings to help raise money for charities. She had a draw for 2 Wendel Clark prints that she had painted.

Tickets are $40 per person for a member and first guest. 2nd and 3rd guests (the max) are $45 each. In addition to the supper and social, Sharon has arranged entertainment for the evening.
General Announcements

Speaker | Rick Wrubleski | Mister Print
Rick has been involved in the printing business since around 1971. Shortly after graduating from high school, he began working for Federated Co-op. He started in their mail room and eventually migrated to their printing department. He later moved to Consolidated Graphics and worked there for 10 years, first on binding and then on sales. His next move was to Mister Print. He started as a customer service representative. The business was started by Wes and Will Boldt. In 1977 they were bought out by Print West. They have 3 locations ... Print West in Regina and on Millar Ave in Saskatoon, plus the Mister Print location on 8th Street East. Mister Print can produce quality printed products due to their high end digital printing equipment. Rick says that high volume print jobs are not as common as before. Customers can order quantities that they need and re-order as supplies run low, eliminating the storage problems associated with large bulk orders and giving customers more flexibility if something needs to be changed. Last year they became FSE certified which means that they handle material in a more environmentally sensitive matter.

Rick had a draw for 2 Boston Pizza certificates plus some cookbooks. Thanks Rick!

722 Club Meeting | Minutes for 2008-02-13

Minutes of meeting submitted by Rick Carlson
Executive Announcements
Greg White, Vice-President reviewed the club financial statements and 2008 budget with us. The club is in a good financial position. We had a higher than usual net income last year largely due to some existing members who had paid up their membership and then did not attend meetings and consume meals.

We have approximately $14,000.00 in the bank. This will help for some time in the future when finances are not as rosy. It is considered normal for a non-profit corporation to have approximately 1 year's worth of expenses in savings. Our annual expenses are currently between $15-16,000.00.

Sue Brooks, Treasurer will be sending 2008 invoices out to members later this month. The membership fee will remain again at $315.00 plus GST.

Keith Moen, President, talked about new memberships. For the present time the club will waive the breakfast fee for a member bringing a prospective new member or visiting VIP to breakfast. Keith also spoke of increasing the networking aspect of our club. Attendance has not been enforced sufficiently in the past and should be in the future. If 3 meetings are missed in row or 25% of meetings are missed in a 6 month period, a person's membership is in jeopardy and must be reviewed by the executive.

Darren McDonald, Membership, passed out copies of the club survey so that those who did not complete it online could do so today.

Greg White also had draft informational pamphlets on each table that will be refined for club use.

Social Announcements
Sharon Kaendo announced a Club Supper & Social to take place Saturday March 8 2008 at the Saskatoon Golf & Country Club. Tickets are $40 per person for a member and first guest. 2nd and 3rd guests (the max) are $45 each. Dale Grant announced he will be leaving CHIP Hotels, the Radisson and thus the 722 Club on February 1 2008 to manage the Sheraton Cavalier. We will all miss him.

Jack Rudolph is looking for speakers beginning with our 2nd meeting in February.

Darren McDonald reminds us to call in or email him if you can't attend a meeting. Our bylaws provide that if you miss 3 consecutive meetings without calling in or if you miss 25% of the meetings in a year, the board must convene to review and terminate membership. There is a link on the home page of our website to send a message if you can't make it in for a meeting.

Speaker | Brenda Brown | Human Resources & Development Canada
Brenda works with HRDC in the area of CPP and OAS. She provided us with a summary of benefits available under both pension plans. CPP was established in 1966. Contributions are based on a percentage of a person's income (approximately 4.5% plus a similar employer's contribution). The percentage applies to a maximum income of $44,900 presently. Any excess income is not subject to the deduction. Benefits are also paid based on the amount of contributions made over the years. This year, the maximum pension amount available is $884 but the average paid out is $475 because people may not have worked as many years or their income was less than the above maximum.

A person can apply for early CPP at age 60 but the benefit will be a reduced amount. If you start early, your entitlement is set so it will not increase when you reach 65. In order to begin early, you must either cease working completely or substantially cease working. You must have no more than $884 earnings for at least 2 months when you apply. After that, your income can go back up again. You can call in to HRDC for a free estimate of what your earnings would be if you are curious whether it is worth it to you to apply for early benefits or to determine what your entitlements are to date.

Disability benefits are available for long term disabilities. The maximum payment available is $1,077 per month.

CPP pays death benefits. The maximum death benefit payable to an estate is $2,500. There is no time limit to apply so if a personal representative for the estate has forgotten to apply they can still do so. Surviving spouses and dependent children may also be eligible for a survivor's benefit in certain cases. It all depends on how long and how much the deceased paid into the plan, the age and disability of the spouse, etc. The maximum is close to $500. HRDC includes common law spouses of 1 year and same sex spouses. The maximum benefit to surviving dependent children is $288 per month per child.

Applications for CPP must be made. They are not automatic.

Old Age Security (OAS) entitlement does not require a person to have paid into the plan. If you have been in Canada for 40 years when you become entitled at age 65, you will receive a pension of $502 per month. If you have been in Canada for less than 40 years, the amount will be reduced by formula. Additional supplements are available for low incomes.

CPP can be split on divorce or separation.

Minutes of meeting submitted by Rick Carlson
Executive Announcements
Due to Jeff Sharpe's busy curling schedule, Greg White will assume the position of Vice-President and Jack Rudolph will be Secretary of the Breakfast Club.

Jack Rudolph is looking for speakers beginning after our first meeting in February.

There will be an executive meeting at Aroma's at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday January 16 2008.

Social Announcements
Watch for email announcements coming up soon. A possible social is being planned for Thursday January 24 2008.
General Announcements
The meeting today started off by having everyone introduce the person to their right. It's a great incentive to learn member names and where they are from.

Various infomercials by members.

Speaker | Jeff Sharpe | Colony Coffee And Tea Services
Jeff grew up in Yorkton. He obtained his marketing degree at the University of Saskatchewan. After graduating, he started working with the Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce. A relative of his is the owner of Colony Coffee in Regina (Northgate Mall in Regina for 28 years) and was interested in expanding so Jeff helped him open their Saskatoon office. They now have offices in Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw.

Colony Coffee supplies coffee to restaurants, coffee houses and various business offices. They sell bulk and proportion packed coffees, teas and other beverages. They also do service work for coffee machines and espresso machines at restaurants. They have the maintenance contract for Starbucks in Saskatchewan. They try to stay away from lower end coffees. The taste trend these days is for higher end coffees. They sell only Arabica coffees ... not the cheaper Robusta. Arabica has a bigger bean, grows higher on the mountain, is less bitter and has less caffeine.

Jeff is participating in the Grand Slam of Curling in Saskatoon on January 23 2008 at Credit Union Place. There are 4 Grand Slam Tournaments per year. To qualify to enter, a team must rank in the top 18 in world rankings. For more information visit www.worldcurlingtour.com.

Jeff curls with Pat Simmons of Moose Jaw. They usually rank around 5th - 7th place in Canada.

Jeff ended by giving out coffee and tea samples to everyone. You can visit their website at www.colonycoffee.com. Thanks Jeff and good luck in your upcoming tournament!
